Hair Routine: Hydrating/Moisturising

Many of us know that hydrating our hair is one of the best things we can do to it. But many might not know why we do it or what the benefits are or even the constraints of over doing it. Because too much of one thing is surely not good for us.

So let’s move on to the good stuff.

When I talk about my homemade hair masks or more specifically hydrating homemade hair masks, I talk about this.

Hydration is a process that is made to moisturize our hair. Be it straight, coily, kinky, curly, etc all hair types need it, even the ones chemically treated. It’s main function is to replenish the water that our hair lost or needs, untangling  and moisturize the threads which brings softness and lightness.  Our hair only has 10% of the 75% water found in our body. We lose this water very fast by chemical processes, dryer, iron, sun, wind, dry climates. We can hydrate our hair with masks or with the pulp of some leaves or fruits like aloe vera and avocado.

 

When looking at ingredients on your masks, the following should be found on the different masks:

  • Vegetable Glycerin

  • Botanical extracts (anything that is plant based followed by “extract”)

  • Panthenol

  • Sugar or sugar derivatives

Our hair mostly needs hydrating that is why we can do it more than once per week. All masks moisturize because no matter what their purpose is, it is what our threads need the most. Deep hydration is the most efficient of all, as it contemplates additional nutrients in relation to other types of hydration. For hydration to be 100% effective it is necessary to use quality products and follow the correct procedures.

Since hydrating hair means replacing the water that your hair lost, you could maybe just wash it all the time right? That way your hair is always haydrated. WRONG!! It might sound disgusting, but washing your hair only twice or three times a is actually better for your hair. The more often you wash your hair, the drier it will become. If you must wash your hair every day, try co-washing. This is when you wash your hair using just conditioner, but not just any conditioner. One that says co-wash. You wash your hair with shampoo only 2 or 3 times a week.
