The Good Hair Wash Routine

Let’s start from waaay back when I was a kid.

That long ago I still had my natural hair and contemplating everyday on having straight hair. My mom would wash my hair once a week. Why? Well, any natural curly, kinky, coily-haired girl will know why. I would sit for HOURS depending on the hairdo my mom would feel like doing that day. The ones that lasted longer were the single box braids she would do all over my head. My hair was long enough to make it seem like she put some extra hair in there. So imagine the time she took. Poor mom,I can only respect her for that. Depending on how tight and well done they were, I could go 3 weeks without having to wash my hair or go through that process of sitting for hours.

Then I relaxed my hair and still washed it once a week. My mom was off the hook though and now I had the hairdressers to deal with. Boy, were they hardcore ladies. I had two to three ladies pulling and pushing at my head from all angles trying to straighten it. There just was SO MUCH HAIR! Poor me, I can only look back and feel sorry for putting myselft through that. I suffered so much at the hair saloon that my only option was to learn to do it by myself. And that’s what I did. By the time I was 14, I was a pro. I straightened my hair so well, people thought I did it at the saloon. Let me tell you, I felt proud.

Well, I had to go back to natural. But this time it was different. I was old enough to do anything I wanted and how I wanted it, right? Right! I would go on and wash my hair everyday. Not knowing that it would not do my hair any good. But why is that? The natural oils your hair produces conditions and protects your strands, so if you shampoo it daily, these oils are taken away by it. This can cause a cycle of over-production of oils and a need to shampoo it even more. I felt that with my hair short and having to redo process of washing and applying a leave in everyday was necessary, because my short hair looked bad when I woke up every morning. I should have just taken a sprayer and retouched it. The fact that I didn’t add any shampoo there, makes all the difference, for it does not strip away my oils.

My hair grew and with it I learnt quite a few things. It’s healthier to wash your hair 2 to 3 times a week max. And that’s what I do now. Doesn’t matter how much of a clean freak I got to be. It also depends on how much oil your scalp produces. If you feel that your hair feels heavy when you do not wash it after 3 days, go ahead and do it. Only you know what’s best for your hair. To get up to 4 days without washing my hair is an accommplisment for me. I just like to keep it clean, light and bouncy.

Usually the curlier your hair is, the longer you can go without washing it. The straighter it is, the more you need to wash it. This all has to do with the natural oils produced by your scalp. The straighter the hair, the faster the oils trickles down, so it gets heavy and oily fast. The curlier, the slower the oils trickle down, so it gets heavy and oily really slow.

Just a tip for the girls that go to the gym.

After that bomb workout all you feel like doing is getting under that shower and washing your hair clean off all that sweat. I mean, you can do that sure. But if you go to the gym everyday and shampoo it everyday… You already know where I’m getting at. Instead of shampooing it everyday, just rinse your hair without the usage of shampoos. It will rinse out the sweat and salt without removing the essential oils.

How often do you wash your hair?
